What is MPCI?

8-min

For farmers and ranchers, MPCI provides the confidence to face the unpredictable.

From weather challenges to market swings, this comprehensive coverage ensures your crops—and your livelihood—are protected. With Allied Ranchers Insurance, understanding and utilizing MPCI has never been easier.

Let‘s walk you through how it works and why it’s an indispensable tool for agricultural success.

What Does MPCI Stand For?

MPCI stands for Multi Peril Crop Insurance, overseen by the USDA Risk Management Agency (RMA), the cornerstone of the Federal Crop Insurance Program (FCIP).

Designed to protect against a wide range of risks, MPCI offers financial security by addressing challenges like drought, floods, pests, and market price fluctuations.

Farmers rely on this program to safeguard their actual production history and maintain operational stability.

Whether it’s preventing loss of crop yields or managing revenue protection, MPCI adapts to the unique needs of today’s agricultural businesses.

Farmers can customize their coverage level based on factors like county T-yield data, acreage, and crop types.

This flexibility ensures comprehensive protection, making it an invaluable resource for modern farmers.

How Does MPCI Work?

MPCI covers an impressive range of perils, including:

Drought
Floods
Excessive moisture
Pest infestations
Plant diseases

By addressing these risks, MPCI acts as a safeguard against loss of yield or revenue.

Insurers utilize their actual production history (APH) to create production or revenue guarantees that protect your operations against both frequent events, and rare, catastrophic losses.

Policy Options

Farmers can choose from two main policy types:

Yield Protection

Protects against loss of yield caused by adverse weather, diseases, or other covered perils.

Revenue Protection

Combines yield protection with price protection, safeguarding against market price declines and revenue shortfalls.

Allied Ranchers Insurance helps farmers navigate these options, ensuring the chosen policy aligns with their operational needs and risk management goals.

Financial Stability

MPCI provides a dependable safety net, allowing farmers to recover from losses due to natural disasters or extreme weather.

By stabilizing operations during challenging times, this insurance protects the long-term viability of your farm.

Income Protection

MPCI helps maintain a stable income by compensating for revenue losses caused by yield declines or unexpected price fluctuations.

Indemnity payments are based on insured revenue and your selected coverage level, ensuring financial predictability.

One of the most attractive aspects of MPCI is its affordability.

Thanks to subsidies provided through the Federal Crop Insurance Program, even small and mid-sized farms can access comprehensive coverage without breaking the bank.

FAQs About MPCI

MPCI provides farmers with the flexibility to tailor coverage to their specific needs, ensuring comprehensive protection against a wide range of risks.

Whether you’re looking to secure your yield, stabilize revenue, or combine policies for added coverage, MPCI offers adaptable solutions to safeguard your operation.

How are premiums calculated?

Premiums are calculated based on crop type, coverage level, acres insured, projected price, your actual production history, as well as other factors. Historical yield data for the county and other county risk factors also play a role in the rates to calculate the premium.

What happens if I don’t file a claim?

Even without filing a claim, having MPCI coverage provides peace of mind and protects against catastrophic risks.

Can MPCI be combined with other types of insurance?

You can only choose one underlying MPCI plan, though it can work alongside crop-hail, SCO, ECO, or other private products. For example, Revenue Protection with Harvest Price Exclusion is a standalone plan you must choose specifically. It's not an add-on, and you can't select both Revenue Protection and Revenue Protection with Harvest Price Exclusion.
